Hello, world — and why this blog exists
A short note about what blogs.varzil.com is for, and the rules I want to hold myself to when writing here.
This is the first post on a blog I have been putting off for a while. The domain existed for months with nothing but a dashboard behind it. Time to fix that.
Why write at all
Three reasons, none of them noble:
- I forget things. Six months from now I will not remember which exact Cloudflare flag fixed the duplicate-tunnel problem. A post is cheaper than a debugging session.
- Writing is how I find out what I actually know. Half-finished thoughts fall apart the moment you try to explain them.
- It is a testbed. Every infrastructure mistake I make here is one I make on a server with a real uptime requirement instead.
The rules
- Write the command, not the theory. Pasted output over prose.
- Date everything. A post without a date is a rumour.
- Say when something was wrong. Version numbers age; corrections are the point.
- Keep it short enough to finish.
What is coming
Posts about the home server stack, the projects built on top of it, and the occasional detour into something unrelated. Everything is Markdown in a Git repository, built by Astro and deployed to Cloudflare Pages — the same pipeline every time, so publishing is a single command.
If a post has an
Updatedline under the date, the original version was wrong. That is a good thing to know before you copy a command out of it.
More soon. The archive has everything published so far.
